Suggestions for Facebook

November 23rd, 2009

  1. Take some time to debug

Seriously, you need to throw more resources into cleaning up this mess. Error messages deteriorate the strength of your brand and your user experience. Don’t revise or add features until they are bug free, or it will be much harder to fix them later. Wait, you have figured that out by now, huh?

  2. Event Reminders

I get a notification and an email every time my buddy hiccups, but no option is available to send event reminders. Start asking “how can we make this more useful” instead of “how can we make this stand out from our competition” because the former will answer the latter.

  3. Allow me to control the communication I receive from Pages, Groups, etc.

People want a way to come together over a statement like “I wear mismatched socks” or “I ♥ SLEEP”, but no one wants inbox messages from the 12-year-old who created the page.

On the other hand, I would love a quick email when my favorite band posts something on their page.

    The options might be:

    • No Communication
    • Normal
    • Notifications
    • Email
    • SMS
  4. Stop the Recommendations

    • Actually, I talk with this guy everyday in real life.
    • No, I don’t want to reconnect with that particular ex-girlfriend.
    • My friends are not interested in speaking with my mother, so I will not recommend them.
    • And most crucially, Stop reminding me that I haven’t heard from my deceased friend.

Cease and Desist

August 26th, 2009

A particular company asked me to remove my portfolio from this website. The letter I received claimed that I had violated the Confidentiality and Non-Competition Agreement which I signed in 2007. I would like to make a few points about my integrity and the subject in general:

  1. During my employment at the company in question, I was contacted to do work for one of their clients behind their backs. I declined the offer.
  2. The agreement places no restrictions on information that has not already been published by the company. Everything in my portfolio had been previously published.
  3. I have never done a personal project with a budget over $1000. If the company doesn’t want projects of that size, then such work isn’t competition.
  4. Even after I left the company, I recommended them to potential clients. You can bet that I never will again.

Yet another iteration

August 19th, 2009

I have changed the primary focus from a portfolio to a standard blog. This is the first time my personal site has been database-driven.

I have no concrete ideas for what I might say, but I am leaning towards music and concert reviews.
